What is your guys opinion on the need for a new console?

Have they improved the tech enough for it to beat the old version (X-Box and PS...let's not even talk about Nintendo because those aren't real video games)?

Or are they trying to sell more bells and whistles?  Or even worse, are they just tweaking existing tech and making it appear like it's a new thing?

(can tell improvements with a new PC over old)

OK, for my amusement, why aren't Nintendo games considered "real video games"?

The hardware on the new PS4 and Xbox One is clearly improved, and will allow for much better looking games.  That's just a matter of comparison.

I'm not sure either of the new systems offer any truly ground breaking new features just yet (maybe cloud support), so in this case it would basically be like getting a new computer....same stuff, better looking.

I think I can hold off on the PS4 for a year.  For the first year the system is out, developers will mostly be focusing on the PS3 (being as way more people will own that still), and the games won't look THAT mind boggling.

Well to be honest, Nintendo hasn't done anything to put its mark in the video game world for a while.  There has been no big innovation, no "adult" games, no sense of "I must buy this counsel just to have this game".

They tapped into a market of casual gamers and party games.  They took all the games of Japan that involved the mundane and passed it off as something to pass the time (while leaving the good Japanese games behind.  How many Lego games do you need, really?

Meanwhile, I'm tempted to pick up a counsel just to play "Last of Us" or "Heavy Rain" or a bunch of other games I really wish would come out on PC!

If you have fun with Nintendo then have fun.  However, I haven't touched a Wii since it came out and every time I see a game that gets released for the big three I always read that that the one with the big "N" on it has the graphics parred waaaay down.

So I don't see Nintendo included in the gaming world that makes a difference other than for low end gamers or party people.

Xenoblade Chronicles and The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword are two of my favorite games this generation.

Both of them are on the Wii.  And both of them are "adult" games.

The wii is a bit of a gimmick at times, but to say it has not brought innovation and a few good games to the table is ludicrous.  (Smash Brothers, Mario Kart, Donkey Kong ???)

All games that have been rehashed and added nothing new to the whole.  It's like Friday the 13th part 62 or Nightmare of Elm Steet 43 - Freddy is REALLY old.

The same could be said of the Elder Scrolls.  They've changed about as much as Mario Kart has.

And that's why I didn't like Skyrim...well among other reasons.

Have any of you played XCOM Enemy Unkown?  I'm playing it right now and it has to be one of the hardest games I've played in years.

So infuriating lol

Did you ever play any of the old school top-down XCom titles?  The insane difficulty was a hallmark of the series.  At times, it made Contra look like a cake walk.

A trailer for Final Fantasy XV was released this week at the Tokyo Game Show.  It's all in Japanese with no subtitles yet, but it looks damn good:

Is it a console system?

Kinda-sorta.  It's supposedly going to be a Linux-based PC in a small form factor like a console.  Most or all of the Linux-compatible games from your Steam list will be playable on it.

My concern is how upgrades/versions will work.  The big question right now is whether Valve will produce a single consistent SteamBox or if they'll license it to any vendor that can meet the specification.  If so, will there be different "levels" of SteamBox, with different games working on each level (or having different levels of graphical fidelity)?  You guys know that I'm a PC gamer at heart, so I'm not super comfortable with the idea.

So, what do you guys think about all of the Steam announcements this week?  SteamBox, SteamOS, and the Steam Controller have all been announced.  I'm cautiously optimistic.  I'm a PC gamer first and foremost, but there is definitely an appeal to having the power and customization of PC gaming with the comfort of playing from the couch.
