For Wes and anyone else that might be playing Borderlands 2, Randy Pitchford is tweeting temporary Shift codes for golden keys throughout the weekend.  They're only good for two hours at a time, though.  Here is his Twitter feed:

I'd like to buy a memorable title to commemorate #2,000. It seems like too good an opportunity to pass up. Here's a list of titles that are currently in my wishlist:

  • Dead Rising 2: Off the Record
  • Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City
  • Game of Thrones
  • Dishonored
  • The Darkness II
  • XCOM: Enemy Unknown
  • Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion
  • Confrontation

I'm leaning toward XCOM or Dishonored, and Dishonored seems to be the popular game of the week. Will it be memorable enough for 2,000?

XCOM! Make it a throw back sequel.  I've heard good things too.

Game of Thrones and Dead Rising 2 are pretty lame, all things considered.  Neither would be 2000 worthy.

I finally decided on Hotline Miami. I'm a sucker for quirky games, and this definitely looks like it will fit the bill.  It certainly looks unique if nothing else, and it has received rave reviews.

Hotline Miami on Steam

For some odd reason, I fell from 1,999 to 1,996 titles over the course of the week, presumably due to the way steam counts DLC, soundtracks, game guides, or some other oddball content.  I also picked up Deadlight and Giana Sisters along with some DLC to get back up to 1,999 before making the big purchase.

A stupendous badass has created a "real" Myst linking book.  He traced down the same 136-year old book that was used by the Cyan team for their modeling and converted it into an amazing touch-screen PC.  This is definitely inspiring.

Anyone else have the problem where every time they play a new game on Steam, it has to install DirectX....

Is this just me, or is Steam not smart enough to figure out it's installed DirectX 50+ times on my computer

Yeah, this has been a long-term issue.  Apparently, Valve's response is that different games use different DirectX packages, even for the same version of DirectX.  It still seems like they could use a package hash to determine whether or not a specific DirectX installer has been run previously.

That is slightly amusing, considering the other 30 games I own that I did not buy through Steam don't make me install DirectX every time Wink

Or how you can close a game and open it back up and there's the DLing of DirectX...again!

I've only seen this a couple times.  I blame the developer of the game for this one, not Valve.
